October arrived and the air started to change. The mornings were chilly when Lydia headed to school, and she was already thinking about her Halloween costume. Every year there was a costume contest, and this year, Lydia wanted to win. Which of the following is the likely source of the passage above?

Answer

A short story

Rationale

The passage uses third-person narration ("Lydia headed to school," "she was already thinking") and descriptive, scene-setting language typical of fiction, rather than a first-person, personal format. This narrative style, complete with a character, a setting, and a building goal (winning the costume contest), is characteristic of a short story.
